Large Neoclassical alabaster sculpture depicting the torso of the Venus de Milo, Italy, circa 1860.
The Venus de Milo, now housed in the Louvre, is a Hellenistic marble sculpture, found on the island of Milo in 1820, broken into two pieces. Acquired by the French, it was presented to King Louis XVIII in 1821 and placed in the Louvre Museum. The goddess is depicted standing, her torso bare to the abdomen and her legs veiled by thick drapery. The modeling is rendered with delicate chiaroscuro, contrasting the smooth, nude skin with the vibrant light in her wavy hair and rippling drapery of her lower body. Her beauty, a symbol of the classical ideal at the Louvre, made her one of the most popular subjects for luxury souvenirs of the late Grand Tour, to the point that many Roman sculpture studios began producing copies.
Our version features only the goddess's torso: it was made around 1860, in veined Volterra alabaster, and is of exceptional quality.
