Large Silver-lined Metal Serving Tray Mid 19th Century
Large silver-lined metal serving tray.
Silver-lining was very fashionable until the middle of the 19th century and was obtained by laminating a thin layer of copper between two thin layers of silver.
When the layers of silver are worn by use or repeated or aggressive cleaning, the copper leaf appears, which is the case of the tray shown here.
Furthermore, the 0rfevre who created this magnificent tray has sculpted the upper layer of silver to reveal a marvellous design of volutes, interlacing and arabesques on a copper background.
The tray's perimeter is sculpted with vine leaves and bunches of grapes.
The carrying handles are worked using the same method as the tray's design.
Once again, this is a magnificent example of goldsmithing from the Napoleón III period
