Nicolas de Largillière (October 20, 1656 - March 20, 1746) was a French classical painter born in Paris. Trained in the Flemish school, he quickly gained a reputation as a portraitist, thanks in particular to his vivid colors. He also produced historical and religious paintings, landscapes and still lifes; his technical mastery enabled him to play with objects, colors and light.
His portraits, imbued with vitality and sensitivity, make him one of the greatest painters of the reign of Louis XV and the Regency.
Eclipsed by his friend and rival Hyacinthe Rigaud, a fashionable painter who attracted the high aristocracy, Largillière deserves to be recognized as one of the great painters of French art.
