Sugar Axe, 19th Century.
This late 19th century sugar axe may seem quite surprising to modern consumers, accustomed to sugar cubes neatly stored in a box or powdered sugar. However, until the invention of lump sugar in 1873 by the Czech Jacob Kristof Rad (1799-1871), the sugar axe was an indispensable tool for housewives.
In fact, until then, sugar in Europe was very often packaged in the form of a conical sugar loaf, invented by the Venetians in the 15the century. At the time, this agglomerated sugar was very hard, and a metal axe was needed to remove it. The axe measures around 20 centimeters, making it easy to grip. At the end of the axe is a curved blade for cutting large pieces. Good overall condition, with traces of use.
