Chinese Figure Of Guanyin In Variegated Stone With Round Fan, C. 1910
A finely carved Chinese soapstone figure of Guanyin, shown in a serene feminine form holding a round fan engraved with flowers. She wears flowing robes, with a long braid falling down the back and flowers arranged in an elaborate coiffure. The carving is delicate and carefully finished, with well-modelled drapery and a gentle, composed expression.
The figure is carved from a richly variegated Chinese stone, with soft natural transitions from pale cream to warm honey and deeper amber-brown tones, which add warmth and decorative richness to the piece. It stands on a fitted carved stone stand made specifically for it and now fixed in place.
The stand is carefully shaped, with a stepped form and a distinctive semicircular front element that gives the base a more architectural and visually balanced appearance.
For collectors, the figure is particularly appealing as a finely carved representation of Guanyin - Guānyīn Púsà (觀音菩薩) — combining the enduring popularity of this revered Chinese subject with attractive natural stone colour and the survival of its purpose-made fitted stand.
