Oil On Panel, Study Of The Annunciating Angel, Florence, Early 16th Century
Artist: Attribuable à Fra Paolino Da Pistoia (1488-1547)
An exceptional oil painting on poplar panel of remarkable pictorial quality, so much so that it can be attributed to the close circle of Fra Bartolomeo della Porta, who led the Florentine Scuola del Convento di San Marco, a thriving artistic workshop of Dominican conventuals.
It is highly likely that this panel was used in a more complex pictorial scheme, and therefore placed above and opposite another panel depicting the Virgin of the Annunciation, given the particular vanishing point of the representation, in Sotto in sù.
This model may have been executed around 1520 by Della Porta's most faithful assistants and heirs, namely Fra Paolino da Pistoia or Giovanni Antonio Sogliani, who were often authorized to use the master's preparatory drawings, and it is possible that this was also the case. The figure of the angel harks back to the aesthetic canons of Fra Bartolomeo, imbued with attention to detail and charged with solemn devotion, the same ones passed down in the School of San Marco in the early 16th century. The color scheme also closely resembles the works of Fra Paolino.
Another possibility is that the aforementioned painters belonging to the School of San Marco of the early 16th century, including Maestro Della Porta himself, may have created the painting in question as a preparatory study.
Upon request, we can obtain an expert estimate for the panel from an expert in Florentine Renaissance painting.
The panel is in perfect condition and shows only brief, significant overpainting under UV light. The extremely fine grain of this panel makes it a unique and highly prized object.
The panel measures 36cm x 48cm.
The 20th-century Renaissance-style frame is 8cm in diameter.
A certificate of authenticity is included with the sale.
