Antique Himalayan dagger, originating from Bhutan or Tibet, dating to the 19th century.

This striking piece comprises a single-edged blade of robust form, showing a pronounced spine and clear evidence of hand forging. The blade has a practical, slightly tapering profile typical of Himalayan utility and dress daggers. The hilt is finely wrapped in silver wire and terminates in a pierced pommel cap with decorative openwork, complemented by a simple guard with corded edging.

The dagger is housed in its original solid silver scabbard, richly decorated in dense relief. One side is adorned with sinuous dragons evolving amidst scrolling cloud motifs, reflecting strong Chinese influence typical of the Qing period. The reverse is equally finely worked and features the Eight Auspicious Buddhist Symbols (Ashtamangala), including the endless knot, conch, parasol, lotus, wheel, banner, vase and paired fish. The decoration extends across the entire surface, including the reverse, demonstrating the quality and completeness of the craftsmanship.

This combination of Chinese-inspired dragon imagery with deeply rooted Tibetan Buddhist symbolism is characteristic of Himalayan works produced under Qing influence. Silver-mounted daggers of this type were worn as part of traditional dress and served both practical and symbolic roles, often indicating status, protection and spiritual significance.

Total length in scabbard: 34 cm.

Good condition, with age-related wear to the blade and surface consistent with its period.
