Léon Hamonet was born on December 13, 1877 in Erquy (Côtes-d'Armor), more precisely at a place known as "La Ville Bourse".
Born into a family of sailors (his father was a sea captain), he remained deeply attached to his native land throughout his life. Although often considered a self-taught nature painter, he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux.
His main teacher was the painter Alfred Smith (1854-1936), an artist renowned for his Impressionist and Post-Impressionist landscapes.
It was under his guidance that Hamonet honed his eye for light and composition, skills he later transposed to Breton landscapes.
A talented portraitist and passionate landscape painter, Hamonet devoted his life to capturing the essence of Brittany, from the city of Dinan to the cliffs of Cap d'Erquy.
A complete artist, he handled both oil and pastel and was distinguished by a fine sense of humor, sketching his surroundings in caricature notebooks and illustrating his correspondence with drawings that were precursors to the comic strip.
Despite a modest existence, he left an immense and varied body of work, marked by a constant observation of nature. Until his death in 1953, he remained fascinated by the flight of seagulls, a symbol of his visceral attachment to the Breton coast, where he now rests.
Léon Hamonet being a painter who lived modestly, his works are today mainly preserved in private collections or managed by the association dedicated to him.
However, they can be admired on an occasional or permanent basis in certain key locations in Brittany.
The town has a collection of works bequeathed to it, notably by members of his family and donors (such as Alain Botrel).
Exhibitions are held there regularly.
Musée virtuel de Bréhat :Part of his work, notably his paintings depicting the island of Bréhat, is catalogued here. Bibliothèque de Dinan: This library preserves traces of his life, and has already hosted exhibitions devoted to his "Dinan period". Musées de Bretagne (Rennes / Saint-Brieuc): Although he has no permanent room, his works sometimes appear in themed exhibitions on Breton painters or the Emerald Coast.
The association "Les Amis du Peintre Léon Hamonet is very active. It frequently organizes temporary exhibitions at historic sites such as Château de Bienassis, Château de la Briantais in Saint-Malo, and Saint-Briac-sur-Mer.
