Antique Cut Crystal Basket With Silver-plated Mount, 1907

Mount and movable handle in silver-plated metal with floral and foliate ornamentation.
On the rim of the mount is an inscription that allows this piece to be dated precisely:
“Presented to A.A. Shepherd Esq. by the Lewisham, Lee & Catford Association as a token of respect and appreciation of his services as Chairman 1905–6.”
Lewisham, Lee, and Catford are three adjoining suburbs in the south of London; the association mentioned in the inscription was most likely a civic or social organization from the early 20th century, bringing together local notables or merchants and active in community and municipal affairs.
The piece was therefore presented to Mr. A.A. Shepherd, as Chairman of the association, as a token of appreciation for his services during the years 1905–1906.
