Provençal Louis XVI Slant-back Desk, Late 18th Century, In Walnut.
It opens to reveal an elegantly carved drop-front, featuring a scalloped medallion of farming implements in its center, flanked by two branches of walnut and oak. It is supported by two metal compasses. This drop-front reveals an interior fitted with four drawers, a shelf, and a sliding compartment. The scalloped front rail has three drawers: a large one decorated with flowers and symbols of love—a quiver and a torch—and two smaller ones, also decorated with flowers and separated by a flowered basket, symbolizing happiness. At the bottom, a motif of a tureen and ears of wheat, symbols of family prosperity, is carved. It rests on four tapered legs, the front ones fluted and serrated. The sides have a flat panel. An interesting Provençal piece of furniture due to its dimensions (88 x 44 cm) and the symbolism of its ornamentation. Very good original condition.
