Large Covered Blue And White Porcelain Vase, Japan, Edo Period
A substantial covered porcelain vase with underglaze blue decoration, made in Japan during the Edo period. Of considerable size, it features a generous body resting on a pronounced foot, surmounted by a flared neck and its original lid with a button finial. The whole is enlivened by a hand-painted decoration in shades of blue, characteristic of Japanese export wares inspired by Ming dynasty Chinese models. The decoration consists of large peonies in bloom, rendered with vigor and spontaneity, a symbol of wealth and prosperity. The shoulder is structured by alternating reserves containing stylized motifs, including a central medallion depicting a mythological animal in a stylized landscape, typical of the Arita decorative repertoire.
