Louis XVI Mahogany Desk, Late 18th Century
An elegant and rare Louis XVI period stepped desk, attributable to Jean-Joseph Canabas. It features a central top covered in gilt-tooled leather, flanked by two sliding side shelves also upholstered in leather. The frieze opens with five symmetrically arranged drawers and rests on four tapered legs with fluted and reeded moldings, terminating in bronze sabots. The stepped upper section has open compartments and two sliding mahogany curtains concealing drawers. The whole is framed by an openwork gilt-bronze gallery. The refined simplicity, the quality of the veneer, the taste for discreet functionality, and the careful attention to proportions allow for an attribution to Jean-Joseph Canabas (1712–1797), a master craftsman in 1766. His furniture, often unstamped, is recognizable by its rigorous construction, the use of solid mahogany, and a discreet elegance that strikes a balance between neoclassical austerity and understated luxury.
