Exceptional Mahogany Travel Microscope Case, Signed Nairne & Blunt, London, Circa 1780
Artist: Nairne & Blunt
A superb and rare set of microscopes dating from the last quarter of the 18th century, presented in its original solid mahogany case. This exceptional lot comes directly from a renowned Cannes cabinet of curiosities. The Microscope: The microscope itself is a precision instrument in original varnished brass, in beautiful condition. It is a compact "chest microscope" type. The round brass stage bears the engraved signature: "NAIRNE & BLUNT London." This signature is crucial, as it identifies the microscope as the work of a partnership between two of London's most renowned makers of scientific instruments in the 18th century, Edward Nairne and Thomas Blunt, active together between 1774 and 1793. Their reputation for quality and innovation is international. The main optical body, the stage with its knurled screw fastening, and the concave illumination mirror are complete and functional. The focusing rack is smooth. The Case and its Contents: The pyramid-shaped, flame-stained mahogany case is a true work of art, complete with its brass hinges and lock. The removable lower drawer contains a rare collection of accessories: a set of four antique glass slides; thirteen mounted frames with various biological specimens, hand-numbered; a circular object; various optical elements; and a handwritten document dated 1790 for Mr. Carcano, listing forty microscopic objects from the frames. Condition: The instrument is in remarkable condition, retaining its original patina and varnish on the brass, a testament to its meticulous care over the centuries. The case shows minor signs of wear, including a chip in the mahogany at the top. The lock and key are not original but are nonetheless 19th-century. Overall, the piece is harmonious and structurally sound. The drawer accessories are in excellent condition. Provenance: From the private collection of a renowned collector from Cannes, known for his eclectic tastes and passion for exceptional objects.
