Sir John Watson Gordon (1788-1864) - Portrait Of Charles Gordon Esq. (died In 1858)

A magnificent, richly colored 19th-century portrait of Charles Gordon Esq. of Wiscombe Park, Devon, attributed to the renowned artist Sir John Watson Gordon RA (1788–1864). The ruddy-faced sitter is depicted seated in three-quarter view against a backdrop of lush moorland, his spaniel at his side. He wears the traditional attire of a high-ranking gentleman: a white shirt, black tie, and black velvet jacket, beneath which is a silk waistcoat emblazoned with the Gordon clan tartan. Wiscombe Park is a 19th-century Gothic country house located in Southleigh, Devon, in a park about 5 km west of Colyton. The house is a listed historic building. The park is now the site of the 914-meter Wiscombe Park Hill Climb. In medieval times, Wiscombe belonged to Otterton Priory and was granted during the reign of Henry VIII to Sir William Bonville, who then occupied the park with deer. It then passed into the hands of the Marquess of Dorset, later Duke of Suffolk, then to the Petre family, and then to the Hows family, from whom it was purchased around 1815 by Charles Gordon of the Gordon family (Earls of Aberdeen). The present house was built in 1826 by Joseph Power of Colyton for Gordon on the site of the former manor. Charles Gordon died in 1858. This remarkable work, in excellent condition, is presented ready to hang and be admired in an 18th-century style gilt quilted frame. High-resolution images available on request. International shipping available. Canvas: 86 cm x 67 cm. Framed: 105 cm x 85 cm.
