A Watercolor Representing Marshal De Villard By Sergeant Moreau
Artist: Antoine Sergent Moreau
Sergeant Antoine Louis François or SERGENT MOREAU was born on October 9, 1751 in Chartres and died on July 15, 1847 in Nice.
He is a painter of history, portraits, gouache painter, watercolorist, engraver and designer. A pupil of Saint-Aubin, he was inspired above all by the manner of Alix for fairly esteemed portraits.
During the revolution he showed his republican convictions and was secretary of the Jacobins club. Terror forced him to flee to Switzerland for two years.
Back in Paris he resumed his rank among the most active artists. But the 18th Brumaire again forced him to flee.
He then settled in Venice and published there The costumes of ancient and modern peoples. He exhibited at the Official Salon from 1793 to 1801.
