Roger Chapelet (1903-1995) Portrait of the ocean liner Asie of the Fraissinet company. Oil on panel 78 x 120 cm Signed lower left R. Chapelet Asia to India 1869 History: Iron propeller-driven ocean liner with three masts and two funnels, built in 1865 in West Hartlepool for Fraissinet. From 1865 to 1870, it served on the Marseille-Alexandria-Syria route and then inaugurated the India route. On January 8, 1870, it was the first cargo ship to travel from south to north. On May 4, 1887, while sailing from Barcelona to Marseille at 2:00 AM in heavy fog, it was struck off the Balearic Islands by the ocean liner Ajaccio of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, which became wedged on its port side by the mizzenmast. A large part of the staff can be transferred directly, the rest being picked up by the landing craft which transport the survivors to Port-Vendres. Provenance: This painting was on board the tanker Alfred Fraissinet in the captain's dining room.
