Oil on wood panel, signed lower left and dated 1893 on the back. *The Entrance to the Port of Marseille* by Pierre Berriat, a painter born in Aix-en-Provence in 1866 and who died in Marseille in 1923 at the age of 57. This painting depicts the entrance to the Old Port of Marseille, with Fort Saint-Jean on the right. Fishing and recreational boating in the foreground, contrasted with more industrial activity in the background, create an interesting contrast. The deep blue of the water contrasts with the slightly overcast sky; the overall palette of blue tones conveys a fairly realistic sense of the bustling activity that characterized Marseille at that time. Beautiful period frame in gilded wood, in excellent condition.
