Bernina Massif, Swiss Alps – oil on canvas, 1940 – H. Horn
Antique painting depicting the Bernina Massif, in the Rhaetian Alps on the border between Italy and Switzerland, executed in oil on canvas with a marked, textured surface that highlights the glacial areas and mountain ridges.
Technical information:
Period: 1940
Origin: Germany
Artist: H. Horn
Technique: oil on canvas
Size: 70 × 100 cm (27.5 × 39.3 inches)
Description:
The painting portrays an aerial view of the Bernina Massif during a Foehn storm, rendered through an oil technique characterized by evident material layering. The artist depicts the snow-covered ridges with dense, irregular brushstrokes that shape the glacial surfaces and rocky slopes with a strong sense of relief. The colour palette is dominated by cool whites, greys and deep browns, used to accentuate the shadowed areas and the structure of the emerging rocks.
In the upper section of the composition, a compact sky appears, with moving clouds enveloping the background mountains, suggesting a shifting meteorological atmosphere. In the foreground, the main ridge is painted with particular attention to the tactile variations of the snow, applied in different thicknesses to create a diffused light effect.
On the back, the date and a cartouche with the artist’s signature are present.
Available with the original frame or, upon request, with a 2 cm frame in antique fir wood, custom-made in our restoration workshop.
