Overview

A refined French desk inkstand from the Napoleon III period, circa 1880, combining richly veined red griotte-type marble with finely chased gilt bronze mounts. The composition is centered by a seated figure directly inspired by Michelangelo’s famous sculpture of Lorenzo de’ Medici, known as “Il Pensieroso,” one of the most iconic works of the Italian Renaissance.

Materials and workmanship

The base is carved from a deep red marble with contrasting veining, consistent with griotte marble widely used in 19th-century decorative arts. The gilt bronze elements are finely chased, featuring geometric friezes, beaded borders and classical motifs. The ensemble stands on four sculptural lion paw feet, enhancing both its decorative impact and its visual weight.

Central figure – Renaissance reference

The central figure is a decorative interpretation of Michelangelo’s Lorenzo de’ Medici from the Medici Chapel in Florence. It faithfully reproduces the contemplative pose, with the head resting on the hand in a gesture of introspection. This direct quotation of a Renaissance masterpiece reflects the 19th-century fascination with historical models and the reinterpretation of great sculptural archetypes.

Style

This piece belongs to the Neo-Grec and broader eclectic movement characteristic of the Napoleon III period. The combination of colored marble, gilt bronze and Renaissance-inspired sculpture exemplifies the sophisticated historicism of French decorative arts in the late 19th century.

Function and composition

Designed as a double inkstand, the object features a central tray for writing accessories, flanked by two covered inkwells. The sculptural figure provides a strong focal point, while the curved outline and gilt decoration create a harmonious and balanced composition.

Dating

French work, Napoleon III period, circa 1880, consistent with comparable marble and gilt bronze inkstands found on the specialist market.
