NOTE Émile Gilioli (1911-1977) was a French abstract sculptor of Italian origin, a major figure in lyrical abstraction in sculpture after the Second World War. Trained in Nice and then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and influenced by Cubism, archaic Greek sculpture, and ancient Egypt, he developed an aesthetic characterized by refined forms, broken lines, and poetic balances. A friend of artists such as Étienne Martin, Alicia Penalba, and François Stahly, he participated in major post-war exhibitions (Réalités Nouvelles, Jeune Sculpture) and received numerous public commissions, notably for war memorials and Resistance memorials. His work, both understated and rigorous, harmoniously blends form, material, and light, finding a place equally at home in public collections and monumental spaces.
