Pair Of Jacob Petit Rihouet 5-light Candelabra With Caryatid Decoration, 19th Century

Here is a pair of exceptional candlesticks, made of porcelain and bearing a monogram. They are inspired by the Restoration period, decorated with caryatids, columns, and Corinthian capitals. They bear the signature Rihouet, rue de la Paix, and JP inside the base. These are exceptional, large, and spectacular pieces. Jacob Mardochée (1797-1868), better known by his pseudonym Jacob Petit, which he adopted in 1816, is a prominent figure in the French art scene in the field of ornamental porcelain. He trained in the workshop of the painter Antoine Gros, a student of David, then took over the management of the Fontainebleau porcelain factory before devoting himself entirely to ornamental porcelain. It remains highly prized by collectors today due to the quality of its creations and the originality of its forms. Louis Marie François Rihouët began his business in 1818 and obtained the title of Royal Faience Maker in 1824. It was at this time that he moved his workshop to 7, rue de la Paix. The porcelain pieces bearing the full name Rihouët, with or without an address, are of very high quality. These are mostly table settings, featuring a monogram or coat of arms, as Rihouët had a select and wealthy clientele, including the King of Portugal. Unfortunately, these candelabras have numerous flaws (visible in the photos): a missing piece on one foot, one figure, and the top and bottom of the stems; a crack running through the bowl on one; stains on the underside of the bowl on the other; chipping and wear on the figures' crowns; small chips on the central flame; and scuffs and signs of use throughout. Please note that the threaded rods need tightening or replacing, as there is play in both candelabras. We cannot ship these fragile items by mail, but we work with carriers; please contact us for a quote. Our numerous photos allow you to appreciate the quality of the objects.
