Portrait Of Saint Louis, King Of France, Louis Ix, By Jouvenet, A Noble Catholic Religious Figure.
Artist: Atelier Jean Jouvenet
17th-century oil on canvas depicting a portrait of Saint Louis in prayer. This French king, Louis IX, took the name Saint Louis following his canonization. He is shown in a contemplative pose. He is recognizable by his traditional attributes: a rich ermine-lined cloak adorned with gold-embroidered fleurs-de-lis, and the crown of thorns he holds with a white linen veil, a sign of profound respect for this relic brought back from the Holy Land at his request in 1239. King Saint Louis played a major role in the acquisition of relics related to the death of Christ. The painter Jean Jouvenet and his workshop (1644–1717) painted several versions of portraits of Saint Louis holding the crown of thorns. These paintings were produced under the Master's direction to meet the demands of convents, churches, or private chapels. Under Louis XIV, chiaroscuro, enhancing the dramatic effect, was frequently used. The painters of religious paintings of this period were largely inspired by the Italian painter Guido Remi (known as "the Guide"). The work I am offering is of fine quality, with delicate modeling of the face. Saint Louis's gaze, turned towards heaven, is imbued with great spirituality. This painting is in its original condition; some old overpainting is visible, consistent with its age. It was relined at some point. There are two small missing flakes, nothing serious (see photo). Portraits of King Saint Louis are very rare. Dimensions: 64 cm x 49 cm. Additional photos available upon request.
