P. Bertrand (active early 20th century) “La Rochelle, the Port” – 1929 Oil on canvas, in its original frame.La Musardiere  presents a charming and sensitive work, signed P. Bertrand and dated 1929, from a series of twelve paintings dedicated to the port of La Rochelle, as evidenced by the old handwritten label preserved on the reverse. A painter now somewhat overlooked in major art circles, Bertrand belongs to that generation of regional artists of the early 20th century, committed to capturing the light and atmosphere of French landscapes from life. His work reveals a sincere approach, inherited from Impressionism, where sensation and chromatic accuracy take precedence. Here, the artist offers an unusual view of the Old Port of La Rochelle, subtly framed by a tree in the foreground whose branches structure the composition. This bold choice breaks with more classical representations and lends the whole a natural and vibrant depth. The famous towers are subtly suggested in a soft, diffused light, rendered with a supple and vibrant touch, while the scene is enlivened by small splashes of color evoking port life. The particularly successful color palette oscillates between nuanced greens, grayish blues, and luminous ochres, delicately capturing the variations of maritime light. The overall effect is a peaceful, almost meditative atmosphere. The work is presented in its original frame, which harmoniously complements the painting and enhances its authenticity. On the back, an old label reads: "La Rochelle: The Port (12 exhibitions) – P. Bertrand – 1 av. Jean Jaurès, 1 – Mézières," confirming that this painting belongs to a coherent and exhibited series. Oil on canvas in good overall condition. A work that is both decorative and interesting, bearing witness to a personal perspective on one of the most emblematic ports of the Atlantic coast.
