In this striking 18th-century Italian Virgin of the Book, the Virgin Mary is not only Mother, but also a learned exegete who, immersed in the reading of the prophetic books, becomes the link between promise and sacrifice. Her gaze, raised in an ecstasy of sorrowful understanding, transcends the page to connect with Isaiah's premonition, recognizing in Scripture not only the glory of the Messiah's coming, but also the terrifying prefiguration of the Suffering Servant.
