Inkwell With Indian Panther, Signed Barye And Founder F. Barbedienne In Paris
Artist: Antoine Louis Barye
Inkwell with Indian Panther by Antoine-Louis Barye, cast by F. Barbedienne. A superb bronze inkwell with a nuanced brown-green patina, resting on a rectangular veined marble base. The center of the inkwell features an elegant reclining panther, rendered with powerful naturalism and keen observation, characteristic of the work of Antoine-Louis Barye, the undisputed master of animal sculpture in the 19th century. The panther, depicted in a posture of vigilant rest, displays a nervous and precise modeling: muscular tension, the treatment of the fur, and the expressiveness of the gaze testify to a perfect mastery of bronze. The piece reflects the Orientalist and naturalist taste of the period. The inkwell is flanked by two circular gilt-bronze inkwells with their lids, harmoniously integrated into the composition. The base bears the signature "BARYE," accompanied by the prestigious foundry mark "F. BARBEDIENNE." Foundry in Paris, guaranteeing a high-quality cast, probably posthumous, made from the original models. Period: second half of the 19th century. Materials: bronze with a brown-green patina, gilt bronze, sea-green marble base. Signature: "BARYE"; stamp "F. BARBEDIENNE. Foundry".
