Large Oil Lamp in Cloisonné Enamel, Champlevé, Onyx and Gilt Bronze France, late 19th century Attributed to the painter Théodule Ribot (1823–1891) H. 174 cm – Base: 35 × 35 cm – Painted column: H. 27 cm, Ø 10 cm A magnificent and majestic piece, this spectacular oil lamp masterfully combines the nobility of its materials—onyx, gilt bronze, cloisonné enamel and champlevé—with the excellence of French decorative arts of the Belle Époque. Raised on a wide square base of veined onyx, this light fixture is distinguished by its rich decoration of finely chased bronze, the corners of which are adorned with architectural motifs and a Corinthian capital of great purity of line. The original, perfectly integrated raising and lowering mechanism testifies to the technical skill and luxury of the prestige lamps of this period. The central porcelain column features a delicately nuanced, hand-painted gallant scene, showcasing the sensitive and luminous touch of Théodule Ribot, a major figure of French realism. The signature "Ribot" appears at the base of the composition, enhancing the overall artistic appeal. The soft palette, the flowing drapery, and the presence of a putto lend this scene an intimate poetry, typical of decorative commissions from the end of the century. The top of the lamp is crowned with a bronze and cloisonné enamel bowl with stylized handles, whose deep colors—midnight blue, imperial red, and fine gold—harmoniously complement the painted column. The whole piece forms a stately work of remarkable aesthetic coherence, where every detail, from the champlevé to the gilded highlights, contributes to a decidedly aristocratic impression. Through its combination of noble materials, its perfectly balanced monumentality, its imposing proportions (174 cm), the quality of its materials, and the presence of a painted work attributed to Ribot, this floor lamp is a collector's item, ideal for a distinctive interior or a collector's study.
