Pair of Large Japanese Porcelain Plates – Arita (Imari), Meiji period (late 19th century)

Diameter: 31.5 cm

Elegant pair of large Japanese porcelain plates, produced in Arita for export during the Meiji period, late 19th century.

The decoration, executed in underglaze blue, depicts a traditional landscape with a tortuous pine tree in the foreground, set against a mountain likely representing Mount Fuji. The composition is both clear and well-balanced, reflecting a classical Japanese iconography in which the pine symbolizes longevity and resilience.

The rim is richly decorated with geometric patterns and stylized blossoms, forming a dense border that enhances the central reserve. The overall execution is refined and characteristic of Arita wares produced for the Western market in the late 19th century.

Each plate is fitted on the reverse with a custom-made bronze mounting designed for wall hanging. Discreet and well crafted, these mounts attest to the long-standing decorative use of the pieces.

Very good overall condition. One minor chip at the rim of one plate.

Gallery’s note:
A highly decorative large-format pair, conceived for wall display. The immediacy of the subject combined with the depth of the blue tones gives the ensemble an elegant presence, equally suited to both classic and contemporary interiors.
