A Majolica Cachepot With High Relief, France, 19th Century - Onnaing
Unsigned but model attributed to the Onnaing factory. H. 21 cm — W. 28 cm — Ø 22 cm — Weight: 1.850 kg. Superb polychrome barbotine cachepot, entirely modeled in relief, presenting a floral composition of stylized peonies with wide, fleshy, rounded petals, superimposed in sculpted layers with naturalistic precision. The piece unfolds against a deep amber background, enlivened by subtle lighter touches that accentuate the texture and warmth of the glaze. The generously modeled leaves display a palette of greens blending jade, moss, and bottle green, with veins finely highlighted in a darker green. Two lateral handles add rhythm to the silhouette; their integration is fluid, almost organic, as if they were emerging naturally from the floral design. The inner lip, a vibrant turquoise, provides an unexpected and luminous touch, a common signature of Onnaing slipware. A distinctive piece, representative of the naturalist taste and colorful exuberance of the 19th century.
