Henri Emilien Rousseau (1875-1933) was a painter who was considered the ‘Last Orientalist’. Born in Egypt to French parents, he quickly developed a taste for travel and Africa. His oriental scenes, which were fashionable at the time, often depict Tunisian, Moroccan, Algerian, Provencal or Camargue riders and horses. During his lifetime, his paintings were the subject of several critically acclaimed exhibitions. Today, his memory is protected by the ‘Henri Rousseau et petit-fils du peintre’ association, and some of his works are exhibited at the Beaux Arts in Paris, the Granet Museum in Aix-en-Provence and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
