Bronze Inkwell With Armillary Sphere, Figures, And Continents, Lerolle Frères, 19th Century
Artist: Lerolle
1 320 A bronze inkwell (silvered with a brown patina) depicting four figures, symbols of the four continents, supporting an armillary sphere on their shoulders. The sphere rests on a finely chased and openwork tray decorated with stylized shells, floral scrolls and arabesques, and clusters of fruit. It bears the signature of the bronzesmith Lerolle Frères*, dating from the 19th century.
This inkwell is in good condition and of high quality. It retains its original glass insert.
The rim of the sphere is chased with the names of the zodiac signs (Pisces, Virgo, Gemini, etc.); some are worn and illegible. The movement of the figures, who appear to be dancing, symbolizes the Earth's rotation.
Please note: slight wear, particularly on the figures, micro-scratches, and signs of age. See photos.
* Lerolle Brothers (active 1836-1863):
The Lerolle brothers, who succeeded their father in 1836, cast Dantan's work entitled "Madame Alexis du Pont in the Styrian Steps" in 1837. After 1850, they began producing electroplated bronzes and imitations, but were still listed as bronze founders in 1863. They participated in the Exhibition of Fine Arts Applied to Industry, but exhibited mainly furniture and relatively few sculptures.
