18th Century French Rococo Miniature Oil On Copper Pastoral Scene Signed
Artist: Jean-baptiste Pillement
This rare painting in a tondo format, attributed to Jean-Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808) and executed in oil on copper during the zenith of the French Rococo at the court of Marie Antoinette, represents a masterful embodiment of a pastoral idyll. In the centre of the composition is a scene of a conversation between two shepherds standing amidst water meadows; in the distance, a castle tower can be seen, situated on a cliff edge and bathed in the golden haze of the departing day. The noble copper support allows the artist to demonstrate to us a jewel-like precision of detail and a distinctive 'inner' luminosity of the colours. This miniature is a rare artefact of its kind, preserving for us the atmosphere of the serene pastoral of the galante era.
