Late 19th – early 20th century France. Wooden sculpture depicting a nude female figure seated on a stylized rock, in a pose that is both simple and expressive. The body is rendered directly, with a deliberate simplification of volumes and a bold freedom in proportions. The face, particularly striking, has naive features with inlaid eyes, giving the figure an almost unsettling presence. This frontality and economy of means bring the work closer to certain primitive explorations of the early 20th century, where the human figure is reduced to its essentials. The carving process remains intentionally visible: tool marks, clean lines, construction without striving for academic realism. This instinctive and sincere approach evokes, in its spirit, certain archaic forms that would later influence artists such as Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani, without ever being dependent on them. The warm and nuanced patina highlights the wood grain and emphasizes the reliefs. The base, carved from a single block of stone, retains a simple, almost raw finish. This sculpture belongs to a tradition of folk art or rural workshop art, where the figure is conceived in a direct, free, and non-academic manner. Dimensions: – Height: 14.5 cm Condition: Good overall condition. Old crack at the head, stable. Wear consistent with age.
