Tachi Kake, Sword Holder, In Kabuto & Shishi Lacquer — Japan 19th Century
The rectangular base with lobed corners rests on a nashiji background—gold lacquer with shimmering reflections—decorated with a kabuto (samurai helmet) rendered in polychrome vermilion and gold lacquer, accompanied by a shishi (mythical guardian lion) and cherry blossoms scattered in gilded hira-maki-e. A back panel in the shape of lobed clouds connects the base to the upright. The double-notched T-shaped top is designed to hold the sword scabbard. Materials: Wood, urushi lacquer, gold powder, polychrome pigments. Techniques: Nashiji, hira-maki-e, taka-maki-e. Dimensions: Width approx. 29.5 cm — Total height approx. 65.5 cm. Origin: Japan.
