Alfred De Courville (1816-1875) – Duingt Castle, Lake Annecy – Graphite Drawing X
Artist: Alfred De Courville
A charming 19th-century pencil drawing depicting the Château de Duingt (also known as Châteauvieux) on Lake Annecy in Haute-Savoie. The work is signed A. de Courville in the lower left corner and belongs to the oeuvre of Alfred Bernard de Courville (1816-1875), a brigadier general and former student of the École Polytechnique, known for his landscape drawings and watercolors created during his travels. The composition shows the château situated on its peninsula, surrounded by lush vegetation, with the Alpine peaks in the background. The delicate handling of line and tonal values reflects a careful observation of the landscape and is in keeping with the tradition of picturesque views created by traveling artists in the mid-19th century. Located between the Grand and Petit Lac d'Annecy, the Château de Duingt is one of the most characteristic motifs of Savoyard landscapes depicted in the 19th century. Technique: graphite drawing on paper. Signature: signed lower left. Period: circa 1850-1870. Dimensions: 15 × 20 cm (unframed). Condition: paper slightly sunned with some signs of age, without significantly affecting the image. A delicate and evocative work depicting 19th-century Alpine landscapes.
