Edward Harrison Compton – View Of The Ortler (south Tyrol) – Watercolor
Artist: Edward Harrison Compton
A beautiful watercolor (1910/1930) depicting a high mountain landscape dominated by a snow-capped peak against a sky animated by clouds. In the foreground, a rocky slope dotted with conifers leads the eye towards the glacial massif that occupies the central part of the composition. The artist subtly plays with the contrasts of light between the snow-covered areas and the violet shadows of the slopes. The supple, luminous brushstrokes and the transparency of the washes give the whole a fresh and vibrant atmosphere, characteristic of early 20th-century alpine painting. A British-born painter and illustrator who settled in Bavaria, Edward Harrison Compton was trained by his father, the renowned mountain painter Edward Theodore Compton. He devoted a large part of his work to alpine landscapes, working in both oils and watercolors and exhibiting notably in Munich, Berlin, and at the Royal Academy in London. Signed lower right. Technique: watercolor on paper. Dimensions: 33.5 × 24 cm. Period: first half of the 20th century. Condition: very good overall condition.
