Vienna Bronze – Putto Riding A Scarab – Humorous Miniature Bronze Circa 1900
A delightful little patinated bronze group depicting a mischievous putto riding a scarab beetle, which he appears to be guiding with delicate reins. The scene, full of whimsy and humor, perfectly illustrates the spirit of late 19th-century Viennese bronzes, renowned for their miniature compositions of animals, insects, and humorous scenes. The chasing is particularly fine: the insect is rendered with great naturalism (ribbed elytra, articulated legs, detailed mandibles), the putto is delicately and expressively modeled, and the patina is warm and deep. The whole rests on a rectangular base of veined red marble, elegantly showcasing the sculpture. This type of miniature subject, blending naturalism and fantasy, belongs to the decorative tradition of Viennese workshops around 1900, highly prized by collectors. A charming decorative object, rare for its subject matter and appealing for its playful spirit. Dimensions: Total height: 8 cm; Base: 10 × 6 cm; Insect: 7 × 7 cm
