Dalpayrat – Art Nouveau Sculpture In Flamed Oxblood-red Sandstone After Constantin Meunier, Circa
Artist: Dalpayrat
An important stoneware sculpture with a blood-red glaze, created around 1900 in the workshop of ceramist Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat, after a model by sculptor Constantin Meunier. This composition presents a double male profile in high relief, rendered with a powerful and naturalistic modeling characteristic of Meunier's sculpture. The main face, intentionally left in raw clay, stands out against a stoneware background enlivened by a spectacular blood-red glaze with green and brown hues, an aesthetic signature of Dalpayrat's productions in Bourg-la-Reine at the end of the 19th century. The piece bears the incised signatures "C. Meunier" and "Dalpayrat," attesting to the collaboration between the sculptor and the ceramic workshop. A fine example of the dialogue between realistic sculpture and Art Nouveau ceramics, this is an unusual production in Dalpayrat's oeuvre, who is primarily known for his stoneware vases.
