Napoleon III Style Rotating Bookcase And Marquetry Display Table
Rare Napoleon III Style Rotating Bookcase – Napoleon III Period – Marquetry and Gilt Bronzes. This rare and elegant rotating bookcase from the Napoleon III period is remarkable for both the originality of its design and the richness of its decoration. The circular top is adorned with particularly refined marquetry, centered with a medallion depicting an antique vase surrounded by foliate scrolls, framed by decorative friezes in the neoclassical style. The whole is highlighted by a finely chased gilt bronze band, adding relief and elegance to the composition. The piece rests on a central blackened wood column, around which several shelves are arranged in a star pattern, forming a particularly ingenious rotating bookcase. These shelves pivot around the central column, allowing easy access to the books arranged all around the piece. Each shelf is decorated with delicate floral marquetry, while remarkable gilt bronze appliqués representing winged griffins structure the whole. These bronze mounts are not merely decorative: they also serve as supports to hold the books in place, acting as both bookends and architectural elements. The tripod base, also richly ornamented, terminates in gilt bronze claws, accentuating the sculptural and prestigious character of the piece. Through the sophistication of its rotating mechanism, the richness of its marquetry, and the quality of its bronze mounts, this pedestal table is a particularly rare and spectacular piece of Napoleon III period furniture, serving as both a library table and a striking decorative object.
