An old pencil portrait, probably 19th century, in a slightly damaged 19th-century frame.
On back, the dark period: affixed are six Notgeld banknotes from the city of Striegau, Schlesien, each bearing a portrait of the sovereign, 1920-1921.
NOTGELD. (NOT = misery, distress, peril and GELD = money, currency).
"The emergency currency called Notgeld in German appeared at beginning of the First World War and was issued until 1924. These banknotes fully illustrate the period of rampant inflation that Germany experienced in interwar years."
