Large Antique Gilt Bronze Khmer Teaching Buddha, Angkor Wat Style, Vitarka Mudra, Cambodia Thai

Large antique Southeast Asian sculpture in gilt bronze representing a standing crowned Buddha displaying the vitarka mudra, the gesture of teaching and the transmission of Buddhist doctrine.

The Buddha stands upright in a serene frontal posture with both hands raised before the body. The thumb and index finger of each hand form a circle while the other fingers extend upward, creating the characteristic vitarka mudra, symbolising the act of teaching, discussion and the explanation of sacred knowledge.

The figure wears a tall conical crown, elaborate jewellery and a richly ornamented costume. The elongated earlobes, stylised facial features and refined ornamentation correspond to the iconography of the crowned Buddha, a representation associated with the concept of the Buddha as a universal monarch in Khmer and Khmer-influenced Buddhist traditions.

The artistic vocabulary — particularly the treatment of the crown, jewellery, facial expression and posture — recalls the Angkor Wat style of the 12th century, one of the great classical traditions of Khmer sculpture.

This sculpture is an old copy inspired by Angkorian models, comparable to a smaller statuette (25 cm) preserved in the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum in Ayutthaya, Thailand.

The bronze retains much of the original gilding and a naturally aged patina with areas of oxidation and verdigris consistent with age.
