The Repentance Of Saint Peter – 19th-century Oil On Canvas, Italian School, Antique Religious P
Antique oil on canvas painting dating from the 19th century, depicting The Repentance of Saint Peter, one of the most moving episodes described in the Gospels.
The painting shows the Apostle half-length, with hands clasped in prayer and his gaze turned upward, his face marked by tears expressing the deep remorse after denying Christ. The subject refers to the well-known Gospel episode narrated in The Gospel of Mark (14:66-72).
The composition is highly expressive: Saint Peter’s face emerges from a dark background, emphasizing the dramatic intensity of the scene. His garments in deep green and warm ochre tones create a harmonious chromatic contrast, while the delicate golden halo highlights the sanctity of the figure.
The modelling of the figure and the use of chiaroscuro recall the tradition of Baroque-inspired devotional painting, still widely produced during the 19th century.
The painting is presented in a later giltwood frame, which enhances its decorative presence. The original wooden stretcher is visible on the reverse.
Good overall condition with natural age-related craquelure visible across the painted surface.
