Stoneware Pitcher, Accolay Pottery
Artist: Accolay
A stoneware pitcher with a globular body and flared neck, featuring a button handle characteristic of Accolay pottery. The decoration, incised before firing, depicts stylized plant motifs, ears of wheat or branches with opposite leaves, arranged in vertical registers across the entire surface of the body. The base slip, a brick red speckled with ash white, creates a contrast with the dark brown lines of the incisions. The rim of the neck has a slightly irregular, intentional edge, typical of the hand-crafted work of the Accolay workshops.
The Accolay Pottery, founded in the eponymous village in the Yonne region in the 1950s, established itself as one of the leading producers of French handcrafted stoneware in the post-war period. His pieces, recognizable by their incised decoration and textured slips in earthy tones, are currently attracting increasing interest from collectors of Mid-Century ceramics. Stoneware, slip, incised decoration. France, Accolay (Yonne), 1950s-1960s
