"Lacquered Case For A Kagami Mirror, Japan, Late 19th Century"

A circular case with a rectangular handle, designed to hold a kagami mirror. Made of reddish-brown lacquer with gold decoration of stylized landscapes, bamboo, and pine trees, executed in gold lacquer on an aventurine ground. Some motifs are rendered in reserve on undulating lines evoking terrain or riverbanks. The interior is also lacquered. A suspension ring is present on the reverse of the handle. The original lid is missing.
