An anthropomorphic polychrome earthenware pitcher by Henriot Quimper, signed Charles Maillard (1876-1973), depicting a Breton woman wearing her headdress and a checkered apron, dating from the 20th century. This pitcher is in good condition. Signed, see photos.
* Charles Maillard (1876-1973) was a French sculptor and ceramicist. He studied at the regional school of fine arts in Angers—where he was taught by Brunelair—then moved to Paris where he attended the Académie Julian and joined the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, where he studied in the workshops of Louis-Ernest Barrias and Jules Coutan. From 1901, after his studies, Charles Maillard exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français. He received several medals and honorable mentions. Also known as a ceramist — among others for the Sèvres national factory (contract of October 15, 1926) — the Breton theme appears in his work from 1926. He collaborated with the Henriot factory during the interwar period, offering the production of numerous groups, often with a utilitarian purpose: ceramics, The Elegant Woman with Parasol in 1927, Woman with Basket of Fruit, Wax Bust of Our Lady of Lourdes; utilitarian Henriot Quimper, pitcher with Breton Musician, water pot Crepe Maker with Blue Apron, Quimper earthenware bookend, Breton egg cup.
