Henri Pailler (1876–1954) Crozant School – Mill Around Crozant

Artist: Henri Pailler
This superb work by Henri Pailler, a major figure of the Crozant School, depicts a landscape with a mill near Crozant, an emblematic village in the Creuse Valley that inspired many landscape painters in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The composition features a mill with rosy hues, nestled amidst dense vegetation. A large tree dominates the scene, while in the foreground, the stream appears, rendered with quick, vibrant brushstrokes. The luminous palette—a blend of greens, yellows, and blues—along with the free and expressive brushwork, evokes the spirit of plein air painting characteristic of the Crozant School. The work is signed in the lower right corner. We are constantly seeking works from the Crozant School: paintings, drawings, or watercolors by artists who worked in the Creuse Valley.
