Pair Of Bronze Busts Of Women In Antique Style, Empire Period
A pair of bronze busts of women with an antique brown patina, dating from the Empire period. Depicted according to the canons of beauty in the Greek profile, they could represent the faces of two goddesses. One, her head crowned with ears of wheat, could represent Ceres, goddess of harvests, or Summer, the wheat harvest season. The second, crowned with flowers, could be a representation of the goddess Flora, goddess of fertility, flowers, and Spring. In all likelihood, this pair of busts once adorned the headboards of a bed, as can be seen on other Empire-period pieces, notably on the furniture delivered to Napoleon at the Château de Malmaison by Pierre Philippe Thomire. One of the two pieces is numbered 308 inside and 3 on the back. Beautiful quality of chasing and lovely, uncleaned period patina, in its original condition, needs waxing. France, circa 1810-1820. Height: 16.5 cm. Width and length at the base: 7 x 7.5 cm.
