18th-century Painted Wooden Serpentine Commode – Formerly Converted Into A Cabinet With Doors
An 18th-century painted wood commode with a serpentine front, resting on cabriole legs and featuring the characteristic curved sides of this type of furniture. The undulating front originally opened with three drawers. The two lower drawers were later converted into two doors, revealing an interior fitted with two flat drawers mounted on runners, likely intended for storing fabrics, papers, or linens. This earlier alteration is evident in the presence of forged hinges and nuts, attesting to an earlier, more traditional style consistent with the commode's use over time. The front retains its keyhole escutcheons and rocaille-decorated bronze handles. The soft, slightly worn patina of the painted wood contributes to the overall charm and authenticity.
