Important Canton Ball On A Sculpted Base – China, Virtuoso Work
A remarkable, finely openwork Canton ball resting on an elegant, equally sculpted base, a Chinese work executed with great technical mastery. The delicately chiseled outer sphere features an imperial dragon moving amidst stylized clouds and scrolls, an emblematic motif in Chinese symbolism evoking power, protection, and prosperity. The interior reveals several concentric, mobile spheres, entirely free-form and sculpted from a single block, demonstrating the virtuosity of Cantonese artisans. The ball rests on a richly sculpted openwork base, forming an elegant vertical movement where a stylized dragon and a phoenix appear, two mythical creatures associated with harmony and balance in traditional Chinese iconography. These nested spheres, true feats of engineering, were produced in specialized workshops in Canton (Guangzhou) and destined for the export market at the turn of the 20th century. Today they are sought-after pieces for the finesse of their sculpture and the complexity of their execution. Origin: China, Canton (Guangzhou) Period: late 19th – early 20th century Decoration: dragon and openwork motifs Work: fine sculpture with several mobile spheres Condition: very good state of preservation Decorative piece and curiosity, testifying to the refinement of Chinese sculpture art.
