Small Fragmentary Roman Bust Of Eros In Marble. 2nd Century.
Small fragmentary marble bust of Roman Eros.
2nd century. 40 x 33 x 27 mm. 45 g.
The chubby, childlike features and the slightly parted mouth hinting at a smile are reminiscent of 1st-century works (a figurine of Harpocrates with similar features can be found in the Louvre).
The central braid is typical of children's faces since Greek times.
The position of the right arm seems to echo the Eros the Archer (particularly the one after Lysippus: see LCMIII, no. 355a).
A charming object to hold, with a striking presence.
Provenance :
Formerly in the collection of a Parisian expert.
Traces of labels from an earlier collection are visible on the back.
