Gilt-Bronze and Champlevé Enamel Jewellery Casket, in the Manner of Ferdinand Barbedienne – Circa 1870-1880

A remarkable French jewellery casket of shaped outline, finely crafted in chased and gilded bronze and richly decorated with polychrome champlevé enamel.

The body and lid are adorned with elegant arabesques, palmettes and floral scrollwork in a refined palette of turquoise blue, deep blue, ivory, pink and red. These geometric and foliate motifs, inspired by Persian and Neo-Byzantine ornament, recall the designs created by Constant Sévin for the Maison Ferdinand Barbedienne during the second half of the 19th century.

The moulded gilt-bronze lid is surmounted by a gracefully modelled seated allegorical child figure draped in flowing fabric.

The front features a keyhole incorporated within an elaborate pierced cartouche composed of scrolls, foliage and palmettes. Richly cast gilt-bronze mounts embellish the sides, while the casket is raised on four scrolling feet decorated with foliage and stylised animal motifs.

The quality of the chasing, the richness of the gilding, the refinement of the enamelling and the harmonious composition relate this casket to the prestigious productions of the Maison Ferdinand Barbedienne and Constant Sévin.

Presented in excellent condition, with its enamel decoration, gilt-bronze mounts and sculptural ornament complete.
